Cape Malay recipe for bobotie
Bobotie
Bobotie is probably the most popular dish made famous by the Cape Malays. The authentic dish is made from a South African Cape Malay recipe using minced beef which is cooked with various ingredients including bread and milk, to form a soft distinctive and wonderfully delicious topping. Generally a typical South African Cape Malay recipe for bobotie also includes apricot jam and raisins, and it produces a mild curry flavour. Of course being such a popular dish, there are many versions of what we call look at, RC Tank Kits the South African Cape Malay recipe for bobotie, and this is just one of them. It is based on (not totally copied from) a recipe that was included in Renata Coetzee's The South African Culinary Tradition published in Cape Town and Johannesburg by C. Struik Publishers (now part of Random House) way back in 1977. Not much has changed since then. Most of the recipes we follow today are very similar.
Ingredients
1 kg minced beef
1 large onion
30 ml butter
1 thick slice white also see, Preserving Flowers with Wax bread
250 ml milk
15 ml apricot jam
60 ml lemon juice
75 g seedless raisins
10 dried apricots
30 ml curry powder of your choice (off-the-shelf or homemade)
12 almonds, quartered or chopped
5 ml salt
2.5 ml pepper
6 bay leaves
2 eggs
Method
Preheat your oven to 108 °C so that it will be ready when you want to start cooking.
Then start preparing the dish by frying the onions lightly in the butter. Be careful not to burn it - you want the onion to be golden brown. While you are doing this, take half the milk and soak the bread in it. Then mix the meat, jam, lemon juice, raisins and apricots, curry powder, almonds, salt and pepper consider, South African BBQ pot bread together in a bowl. Spoon this into an ovenproof dish.
Now beat the remaining milk together with the eggs and pour it over the meat. Push the leaves into the mixture in the dish and then bake for about 45 minutes. Once baked, the top should be golden brown but not burnt.
Usually this dish is served with rice plus chutney and various sambals including chopped nuts, chopped tomatoes consider, RC Racing Cars and onion, yoghurt and sliced banana, and chutney or pickles. It isn't usually served with a vegetable, have a look at, Collectible Beer Glasses but could be served with fresh green checkout, Poker Video salad that would definitely enhance this popular South African Cape Malay recipe.
